My family and I are completely opposed to this form of mining in NZ.
I grew up in an open cast coal mining town in Australia and felt disgust at the complete disregard to the environment there, this was in some of Oz’s best dairy land. I get the cold shivers when I even see these type of operations, so I can only guess the implications of what is proposed by this form of gas extraction. The documentary’s I’ve seen with fire coming from water taps in America is frightening enough. In Canterbury there is already so much uncertainty due to the continuous aftershocks, it would be an outrage even to consider such a process. So we must fight this in any way we can, count us in!.
Graham
Thanks for stopping by our site Graham. NZ should absolutely be looking and learning lessons from what is happening overseas with fracking. In communities in Australia where this is happening residents are, by enlarge, not happy. The doco ‘Gas Rush’ gives a good view of some of the issues that are arising. If fracking starts in Canterbury and we end up seeing these sort of things locally, nobody can say we weren’t warned. Join our group, sign our petition, contact your local MPs, tell friends and family and get the word out there.

How do you know that the company trying to get the exploration permits even intends on using fracking to get gas? if there is even gas there!!Also the small flyer that was left with a petition to sigh in my local service station in Oxford, North Canterbury was full of lies and scare tactics. you are scarying people into signing a petition based on 5 bullet points that are just not true. lies lies lies….shame shame shame.
I would love to get some contact details for the person in charge of these lies and have a discussion over the phone, although i suppose faceless lies are easier.
regards

Hi there – thanks for taking the time to comment. I’m sorry you feel that we are trying to scare people. That’s certainly not my intention on this website and that’s certainly not the intention of the Facebook group. I’m guessing you are referring to the flier with the Canterbury exploration maps on the front. I don’t think that’s full of lies at all, it’s simply designed to let people know that there are some serious risks that are being reported from places overseas where fracking has taken place.
Fracking is a pretty widespread way of extracting shale and coal seam gas, so it’s not particularly ‘out there’ to consider this might be used in Canterbury were the appropriate deposits found. How do we know they’ll even find gas? Well, we don’t but the chances seem pretty high. Take a look at this article from last year. http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/lifestyle/mainlander/5752432/Is-Canterbury-a-gas-laden-bonanza – I don’t think that taking a ‘let’s hope it doesn’t happen approach is the way forward.
Whilst I’m not prepared to hand out my phone number to people online, the group hold regular events. If you want to attend one in your area and discuss your concerns check back on this site where we will post details of upcoming events.
Hi, I am Phillip and I am actually a capitalist by nature, however when it comes to fracking or any activities that put nature AT RISK FOR PROFIT, I totally object to.
By accident I came across fracking in Texas and was totally blown away by the damage it did swith total disregards to residents and their water supply. It actually killed people until they caught on what it was…..Then the government reneged on any help for a long time until they were finally forced into action.
THIS CAN NOT BE ALLOWED ANYWHERE IN NEW ZEALAND and
HI Phillip,
Thanks for stopping by. Nothing wrong with being a capitalist! Too often people who raise concerns about an environmental issue are dismissed as crazy greenies, it’s a neat strategy designed to undermine what are legitimate concerns. Our group actually comes from all walks of life and has a variety of political views but we are united in our belief that fracking needs a bit more investigation before we starting handing over huge swathes of the country to it. If you’d like to join and make your voice heard then check out our Facebook group and see some of the things we have going on around NZ to raise awareness of fracking.
We are nuclear FREE……next step >>>>>FRACK FREE!!
We don’t need these filthy chemicals on our land or worse ending up in our water supplies. And if our government had any common sense they should not torture their population with fracking techniques that can cause earthquakes in an already earthquake prone country!!!
Did we really give them the authority to lease our land to foreigners to destroy it???
